At ILEWG Young and Artistic Approaches to the Use of the Moon

From the 21 to the 26 of October, ILEWG 9th (International Conference on Exploration and Utilization of the Moon, ICEUM9/ILC2007) was held at the Hilton Conference Palace in Sorrento, Italy. The conference organized by Dr. Bernard Foing (ILEWG Executive Director, ESA Chief Scientist), was characterized by different approach of the Moon utilizations: from new technology for energy supply to a pure space art.
Interesting were the live connection with the launch of the first Chinese satellite on the orbit to the Moon and the arrival of the Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli to the ISS with the European Node 2 module, events that took place in the ILEWG 9th days.
As a part of the ILEWG 9th conference, simulated Lunar Zen Garden was built as an artistic landscape design by Ayako Ono and Irene Lia Schlacht (from Extreme-Design.eu) at the Hilton hotel, thanks to the ICEUM and the Hilton Sorrento Palace staff (coordinated by Giovanni Di Maio). This project will be also presented at the ISEC 2007 (International Space Exploration conference, Berlin 8,9 Nov.).
The young engineer Trond Krovel, from the Lunar Explorer Society (www.lunarexplorers.net), organized a workshop where young enthusiasts and lunar professionals stated together the new possibilities of lunar exploration. Ms. Ono and Ms. Schlacht contributed to the Lunex workshop regarding artistic aspects. As part of the conference awards Lunex won “Young Lunar Explorers Award” from the International Program Committee of IECUM9.
